What is The Inheritance Games About?
Avery Kylie Grambs lives in Connecticut, sometimes at her half sister’s apartment and sometimes in her car. She goes to highschool, works at a diner and plays chess in the park with a man named Henry. She does well in school because she knows that her future is the only way to change her life.
Her life changes at the Will reading of Tobias Hawthorne, the richest man in Texas.
Why was a random highschool girl from CT included in the will?
No one knows and she, along with the four Hawthorne grandsons are determined to find out.
My Review
This is a book that I have read more than once and everytime I do, I have a little bit more trouble putting it down. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is an excellent writer of puzzles. Just when you think you have figured it out, you’re wrong. The characters in this book had unique personalities and decorum of their own. Not only the main character’s but even some of the small characters as well. This book always leaves me finding something I didn’t notice in a previous read. I won’t give anything away about the end or why exactly Avery ended up at The Hawthorne Estate. Instead, I will tell you to make sure that you always have the next book in the series on hand before finishing because this book and series will keep you reading late into the night.
Avery
There are six main characters in this book that I would say you pay attention to the most. There is of course, Avery Kylie Grambs. Avery is very independent and wants to figure out the world in front of her no matter what gets in the way. She gets flooded into a world that is irrecognizable from her own but never lets herself get swept up in the wealth. Instead, she gets swept up in the mystery and the secrets hidden on the very estate she now owns.
Libby
Then there is her half sister Libby who bakes when stressed, prefers leather pants and black choker necklaces to appropriate attire. Though she will force herself into the acceptable attire for a wall of new boots as any rational person would. She fiercely loves her sister and as her sister’s legal guardian, she does her very best to be there for her. We would all do well to have a sister like her.
Then there are the four Hawthorne Grandsons.
Nash
The oldest is Nash Hawthorne, the cliche older brother who rides into town on a motorcycle and loves to rescue a damsel in distress. He prefers cowboy hats and boots in contrary to the suits you can usually find his brothers in. He was never one to take part in the games that were mandatory on the estate but he would do anything to protect his brothers.
Grayson
Then there is Grayson Hawthorne, the heir not-so-apparent. Grayson has an eye for art and anyone that he thinks may be untrustworthy. He is someone that you would not want as an enemy and sometimes can be confusing as a friend. He has a heart that you want in your corner though.
Jameson
Then there is Jameson Hawthorne. His and his brother Grayson have shared a lot over the years including a mysterious ex that still seems to be at the center of everything in the house. He has a habit of showing up behind the walls and also has the charm to make anyone smile.
Xander
Lastly, there is Xander Hawthorne. He is an energetic expert of scone mathematics, a great listener and will introduce you to his robots if you are not attatched to your eyebrows. You will find him in unlikely places but you will always find him exactly when you need him.
What Made This Book Impossible to Put Down
I have read a lot of series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. She has incredible fast pacing and hooks that have you walking around the house with your nose still in the book. The characters and the world that she immerses you in lets you see the story so clearly. I think that the number one thing that made this book impossible to put down were the puzzles and the mystery. She creates a storyline where not only does the reader feel called to solve the puzzles but to look for things they might have missed at every reread. The attention to detail in the mystery and puzzles within her book is unlike anything that I have seen within the YA genre.
