summary (spolier-free)
Marina is a story about two sisters. The book goes to and fro from the past when the girls were growing up to the present. The story begins at Celine’s wedding at the Italian Villa. Celine seems distraught at the wedding and Marine seems convinced she must be regretting the wedding itself but Celine assures her that is not the case. The wedding goes on, and all the magazines are there to write articles for the wedding and Celine’s future business. When the wedding is over, Celine and her husband head out on a yacht for the honeymoon and Marine heads back to New York. Marine is much more secure in New York where she has curated the life she wants away as much as possible from the umbrella of her family. Her only connection that she chooses to keep is to work at the family company. Marine’s respite of a life is interrupted when she finds out that her sister is missing from her own honeymoon and that she is on her way to New York. The story continues as Marine agrees to go back to Santorini with her sister. This book is a beautiful simple story that keeps you guessing and handles the storyline with respect and honesty. Without giving too much away, Julienne Smith gives an honest hand to something many women have dealt with in our lives and I was very touched to see how she kneaded everything into the story.
